BAILIAN'S Experience on Helium Compressors

Publish Time: 2024-01-03     Origin: Site

Helium is a non renewable resource that can only be extracted from a few natural gas fields. In recent decades, our consumption of helium has been continuously increasing. Since 2000, the supply of helium has been in short supply, reaching a bottleneck, resulting in increasingly expensive prices, and even money may not be able to buy it.

How does a Helium compressor work?

1. Inhalation stage: During this stage, helium is sucked into the helium compressor from the external environment. Helium enters the helium compressor, usually through valves or other control devices. At this stage, helium is injected into the cylinder or chamber of the compressor.

2. Compression stage: At this stage, helium begins to be compressed. Helium compressors are typically composed of one or more cylinders or chambers, and are driven by an electric motor or other power source through a connecting rod and crankshaft mechanism. When the piston of the cylinder or chamber begins to rise, helium is compressed to a higher pressure level.

3. Closed stage: During this stage, helium is sealed inside the helium compressor. When the piston of the cylinder or chamber reaches its highest point, it will close and no longer accept further entry of helium. This further increases the gas pressure.

4. Exhaust stage: During this stage, compressed helium is released into the output pipeline through a valve. When the piston of the cylinder or chamber begins to descend, the valve is opened and helium is released into the output pipeline. Helium is transmitted from the output pipeline to the required equipment.

The complete working cycle of the helium compressor is continuous. Helium is sucked into a helium compressor, compressed, sealed, and then released to meet the needs of different fields.

What are our suggestions for helium compressors?

Helium gas is widely used in various fields, such as low-temperature superconductivity research, gas chromatography analysis, material heat treatment, pressure testing, medical technology, and so on. As a rare resource, it has been increasingly concerned by various sectors of society.    Due to the increasing demand for helium, people's attention to helium recovery and utilization is increasing, and more and more companies and institutions are starting to equip helium recovery systems. In short, the helium recovery system is a system that uses a helium compressor to boost and recycle the used helium gas. Through reuse, the consumption rate of helium gas is minimized as much as possible, reducing the cost of helium input. However, many times, most companies use air compressors instead of helium compressors to reduce investment in helium recovery systems. In fact, doing so is not worth the loss, because professional helium compressors are very different from air compressors. As is well known, the molecular weight of helium is much smaller than that of air, so helium is prone to leakage during compression. To reduce the leakage rate, professional helium compressors use special structural forms for shaft seals and sealing gaskets. Due to the special treatment of the sealing form, the leakage rate of professional helium compressors will be much lower than that of air compressors. We are now approaching maturity in helium liquefaction and recovery, and supplementing a certain amount of helium every year can meet the research needs of the entire institute.

What is our experience with helium compression?

Liquefied helium is not only technically challenging, but also expensive. In terms of technology, compared to air separation devices, helium liquefaction devices also require a pre cooling program driven by an expander (which we are already able to independently design). The complexity of control system technology makes centralized liquefaction and tank transportation an effective way to reduce economic costs.

However, helium liquefaction is just one of the functions of helium processing equipment. Another function is to recover the helium gas evaporated or discharged from the device equipment. For this purpose, we have installed pipelines in all buildings to transport the remaining helium from each laboratory to the central airbag. After the airbag is saturated, the horizontal control sensor starts the high-pressure gas compressor, absorbs and compresses helium to 300 bar, and then stores it in a high-pressure container. The helium required for the helium liquefaction device is obtained from these high-pressure containers. In this way, a closed helium loop is formed.

Due to the high diffusivity of helium, it can penetrate extremely small cracks, leading to helium loss. Therefore, we have taken this into consideration when constructing helium pipelines, striving to minimize the loss of helium gas flow. The helium pipeline is made of copper and welded with brass. The pipeline does not need to withstand high pressure, but the thermal fluctuations generated during helium transportation can cause strong mechanical stress. In addition, the pipes in the recycling system are made of special steel welded on rails.

What are the application areas of helium compressors?

Helium compressors have been widely used in many fields due to their unique gas compression characteristics and refrigeration capacity, including but not limited to:

1. Air separation: The separation and use of helium in oxygen and nitrogen.

2. Refrigeration and air conditioning system: Utilize the refrigeration characteristics of helium to produce refrigeration and air conditioning equipment.

3. Medical: Helium is used in the medical field for ultrasound instruments, CT scanners, etc.

4. Industrial use: Helium is widely used in manufacturing, refrigeration, gas separation, and other fields.

5. Scientific research: Helium is widely used in fields such as nuclear magnetic resonance and particle physics.
